From the Commanderís Desk

Hope your and your families are getting through our New England winter in reasonable shape, taking into consideration the cold and flu season, both of which have hit us pretty hard. I for one am looking forward to the spring. A lot has happened since the last newsletter and I would like to recap some of the events that have taken place.

During the month of November, the National Commander Designee, Dan Dellinger, along with his entourage visited Post 47 and all were reasonably impressed with our facility and the well represented membership that greeted him. District Three also held its monthly meeting at our post which was followed by a delicious luncheon prepared by the Ladyís Auxiliary.

The month of December was also a busy month with two parades, Dover & Rollinsford/South Berwick and once again a delegation of Post 47 headed by Richard Wasson and Bernie Mushorn was there to represent our Post. Our annual childrenís Christmas party was a success and kudos are given to our Children and Youth Officer Larry Larkin and his volunteers who made it all happen. The many hours of volunteerism are very much appreciated by yours truly and the kids that reaped the benefits of such a wonderful yearly event. Thanks again, Larry. Also, a yearly event that is near and dear to my heart is the scholarship awards ceremony which took place on the last Sunday in December. Legionnaires, the SAL, the Lions Club and members of the S. Berwick VFW all participated and made this event a tremendous success. Itís a great feeling to be able to hand a thousand dollar check to a deserving student. The recipients as well as their families are truly appreciative.

On the 26th of January, eight members of our Legion family, to include the SAL and the Auxiliary, attended the Department Mid-Winter Conference held at Post 7 in Rochester. There were some very interesting speakers and worthwhile information for everyone in attendance. On a sad note, January also brought the death of a 60 year Legionnaire, Joe Loze. Ten Legionnaires presided at his funeral service. May he rest in peace. Thanks to those who were in attendance.

Best wishes for 2013,

Ron Chabot, Commander Post 47
